Promoting sustainable energy use in the transport sector of the Danube Region

In the year of 2018 the Hungarian coordination of PA2 was focusing on green transportation.

In accordance, PA2 has commissioned a study, prepared by the Regional Centre for Energy Policy Research (Hungary), titled ’Promoting sustainable energy use in the transport sector of the Danube Region – Towards a uniform policy assessment methodology’.

Transportation is the only sector among the major greenhouse gas emission sources, which increases its emission (by 18% between 1990 and 2016). The trends are even unfavourable in the Danube Region, where the transport related emission grew by 48% in this period (without Germany and Ukraine), due to economic development, the transit role of the Region and the increasing dominance of the diesel-fuelled road transportation.

Our study focuses on the international freight transportation, where decarbonisation policies, such as infrastructure investments, financial incentives and regulatory constraints can promote the use of sustainable energy with two different but complementary approaches: incentivising the use of alternative fuels in road transportation, and diverting the road transportation into less carbon intensive modes, such as rail.
